- Database
Capabilities
- Allows you to acquire, save, edit, redo, list, and delete lung volume
records.
- Clear
Colorful 3-D Graphics
- Volumes, which are color and pattern coded, are depicted as individual
and stacked bar graphs in a resizable window.
- Toolbar
- For quick access to frequently used software features.
- Data
Export
-You can save the lung volume data into ASCII text files which can be
read by other applications such as word processors, databases, spreadsheets,
or statistical analysis programs. This is useful for incorporating the
data into reports or performing additional customized analyses.
- Textual
& Audio Prompts
- The software helps to guide you through the data acquisition process
with textual and, if your PC has a WAVE compatible sound card, verbal
prompts. This facilitates the measurement of lung volumes in a classroom
laboratory setting. The audio prompts can even be customized if your
PC has sound input capabilities.
- Automatic
Tidal Cycle Detection
- The software senses each resting breath for determination
of tidal and expiratory reserve volumes. The spirometer sensitivity
can be adjusted to fine tune acquisition.
- Automatic
FVC & FEV Determination
- The software senses the onset of exhalation thereby eliminating
user intervention and reducing potential measurement error.
- Automatic
Rate & Minute Volume
- Computation of the resting ventilation rate and minute volume is performed
during each tidal volume measurement.
- Automatic
Group Averaging
- Data averages are automatically maintained by gender as well as for
all records.
- Group
Analyses
- Data can be displayed in spreadsheet format or shown as a stacked
bar graph for the entire database or by gender.
- Predicted
VC
- Vital capacity is computed based upon the subjects gender, age,
and height.
- BTPS
Factor
- Gas volumes are automatically converted to compensate for body temperature,
pressure, and humidity.
- Hardcopy
Output
- Printouts can be obtained for all data analysis and acquisition windows.
- Clipboard
Support
-
The image of any window can be copied to the clipboard and then pasted
into another application, making it easy to incorporate acquisition
or analysis windows into lab reports, etc.
- Clear,
colorful 3-D
graphs.
- Customizable
audio
prompts.
- Automatic
determination of ventilation rate and minute volume.
- Summary
table
display in row/column format.
- Graph
averages
by gender or for all subjects.
- Export
data
for more extensive analyses.

This image
provides an overview of the Spirocomp program, showing each of the windows
available for acquiring and/or analyzing data. The tool bar at the top
provides one click access to many of the software features. The status
line at the bottom displays the name of the current data file, the number
of records, and the currently selected record.
|
|
This image
shows a graph of the data for the entire data file. A similar graph can
be viewed for individual records or by gender. The stacked bar graph helps
one visualize the relationship between the various volumes.
The Summary
Table window displays all volume data in row/column (spreadsheet) format.
All data can be exported or "dumped" to a text file and then imported
into a database, spreadsheet, statistical analysis, or other such program
for further review or additional analyses.

This image
shows the information displayed during the measurement process - in this
case, tidal volume. The volume gauge on the left displays the raw spirometer
volume, while measurement status and text prompts appear at the bottom
of the window. Audible prompts can be heard on computers which support
sound output. Note that the vital capacity is displayed as a ratio of
forced expiratory volume. It can also be viewed as a stacked bar of the
volumes of which it's comprised (see the Analysis screen capture).
