Flexicomp
For demonstration of mono synaptic and cognitive neurological response.

We've developed this specialized neurological tool to quantify and qualify reflexive and cognitive responses. Flexicomp has a joint movement transducer that can be configured to monitor the knee jerk reflex, the biceps reflex, the triceps reflex, and the plantar reflex.

more about mcaddam2All Intelitool products for Windows or Macintosh computers interface using the McADDAM II Data Acquisition System. The McADDAM II is a fast, accurate and versatile multi-channel analog to digital converter which gives you high quality and reliable data.

With Flexicomp students can:

  • Compare monosynaptic versus cognitive responses using the same muscle and limb system.
  • Accurately quantify stimulus response (degree of deflection).
  • Accurately quantify the time intervals involved with the reflex arc such as the latent period and time to the maximal response.
  • Demonstrate neurological facilitation.
  • Demonstrate antagonistic dampening.
  • Quantify visual versus auditory response times.
  • Compare responses and times of the same stretch reflex systems on different limbs, and compare different stretch reflex systems such as the plantar reflex versus the knee jerk reflex.
  • Compare the deflections and time intervals of the same stretch reflex systems on different subjects.

Flexicomp screen capture
This is an example of a response to a stretch reflex stimulation. Data acquisition was triggered by the application of the percussion hammer so the left edge of the screen is the moment the stimulus was applied. The latent period is immediately calculated as well as the maximal rotation. The “Percent of Best” feature allows you to reject data from a poorly applied stimulus. Simply reject all responses which fall below an acceptable threshold as compared to the best response.

Flexicomp screen capture
Flexicomp also includes a reaction timer.
Flexicomp screen capture
One of the most interesting things which can be done with Flexicomp is the comparison of reflexive and cognitive responses using the same muscle groups. The window above shows how the parameters for a random cognitive stimulus is set up.

Flexicomp screen capture
This is an example of Flexicomp’s overlay feature. The red line is a reflexive response and green line is a cognitive response. Notice the time to respond (latent period) is twice as long for the cognitive response. Also note that any captures can be shown using the overlay feature, not just adjacent captures. In the above example the second and thirteenth captures are shown.

The features of Flexicomp for Windows and soon to be released Macintosh version include:

  • Smart Notes - This feature allows you to add text to a data file. When the note is opened the graph will automatically zoom to the same view of the data as when you made the note and all measurement tools will be in place exactly as you placed them when you made the note.
  • Response Overlay - On both the data acquisition and analysis screens, multiple captures can be viewed in multiple colors all in the same window.
  • Cognitive Response - The data acquisition window has random audible or visual "stimuli" allowing the quantification of cognitive responses using the same muscle group/limb system as with the reflexive response.
  • Reaction Timer - A window allowing the timing of cognitive responses to audible and/or visual stimuli.
  • Clear Colorful Graphics - The data displays as well as the analysis tools are all colorful, clear and easy to understand.
  • Clipboard Support - The image of any analysis window can be copied to the clipboard and then pasted into another application. This makes it easy to incorporate data as well as analysis information into lab reports, etc.
  • Hardcopy Output - Printouts can be obtained for all data analysis windows.
  • Data Export - Flexicomp data can be saved in standard annotated 'TEXT' files so data can be used with other Windows applications. For example, you can now view the raw data in a word processing application or perform additional calculations graphing of the data using a spreadsheet application.
  • Multiple Window Interface - Multiple, re-sizable data analysis windows can be open at any one time.
